5 Tips For An Organized Closet

My closet is one of my prized possessions! And while it's not as big as some other bloggers on the internet (see: New York City sized closets), it's filled with love and a lot of meticulous organization. Thought it would be fun to share a peek into my closet as well as my top 5 tips for keeping it organized!

For New York, this closet isn't too bad. And honestly if I had more space, I'd probably fill it up. This size closet is making me keep the best of the best of my wardrobe. I'm really lucky for the closet to come with great built-ins. While I could have organized it better myself via the Container Store, it's nice to not have to worry about the money or what to do with it when you leave.

You can see I did add the top row (where the skirts hang) myself. That's because I hate wasted space in closets! There was this big gaping hole above the long hang and it was basically useless. I knew I wanted to hang my skirts and I knew it wouldn't take up too much room. So I added it in, but it kind of looks like it belongs, right?

Hope you enjoy my tips for organizing your closet. If you have more let me know down below!!

----------------

1. One In One Out Rule - My mom taught me this long ago and while I never really listened until last year, I'm all for it now. With our space being limited in the closet department you really need to make sure you're choosing your clothing wisely. If you bring in a new dress, an older one comes out. It's really hard at first but seriously gratifying once you get the hang of it.

2. Cut Ties With Unworn Clothes - If it's been a year or more and you haven't worn it, get it out of your closet. Donate or sell it but either way, get rid of it. I read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up sometime last year and it was truly life changing. She basically has a step-by-step process of how to get rid of (and say goodbye to) clothes you no longer need.

3. Put Like With Like - I do this by categories (dresses, tops, skirts, jackets) then by color (white, tan, blue -- since these are my main ones -- and then the rainbow) and then by sleeve length. I feel like when you do this it's prettier but also easier to find what you're looking for. I sometimes skip on the rules of length when it comes to my tops but I'm pretty good at it when it comes to my dresses!

4. Have The Right Hangers - Invest in good hangers! If you are out of college and still own those round plastic ones or anything with a wire that you get from the dry cleaner, its time for an upgrade. This is totally personally preference but I love the skinny velvet ones. You can hold SO much more with them and in this space, you need all the help you can get! HERE is a 50 pack for $20 so you really have no excuse. I find the closet is more organized when you have similar hangers.

5. Hang The Same Way - This goes for the hanger direction AND the clothing direction. Hangers should always be placed on top of the rod (instead of underneath/behind it) and the front of clothes should always face the same way. It makes thing look better but its also a lot easier to find! Think of it like a clothing rack at a store. You want to search for clothes in one direction.
