What would Covering the Bases be without a little baseball from time to time? One of my very favorite things to do in the summer is go to a baseball game. Thankfully I'm lucky enough to go to multiple a year...

My parents currently live in Chicago and I went to high school there as well so I do have some loyalty to the Chicago teams. Moving around so much and just loving the game of baseball makes it hard for me to just have one die hard team alliance. I like them all!

Of course I have ones I don't like and others I like more than most but in general, I just like to cheer for players, unexpected things and the underdog. I cheer to history to be made and a difference to happen in a a franchise.

My family has great seats to both the White Sox and the Cubs and every year I try and manage to come home for at least one game. One of my favorite places in all of baseball is Wrigley. The history behind the team (wether it be good or bad) is just so consuming and addictive.

*about to dive into some baseball knowledge*

Even more so when they're having a good year. And boy are they having a good year! They just recently clinched the Wild Card and will play a single elimination game on October 7th.

The Cubs haven't seen a postseason since 2008 (when I was still in Chicago), haven't seen a World Series game since 1945 and haven't WON a world series since 1908. Which, as you may know, is the current record drought for a team in Major League Baseball.

So to say Chicago (and every baseball fan out there) is excited to see where this can go is an understatement. I think if the Cubs were to make the World Series, America would have to turn into a Cubs fan. I mean, how can you not cheer for history?

Of course, the Cubs have some "obstacles" in their way. And by obstacles, I mean curses. That's why they haven't won since 1908, haven't you heard?! Curses in general are silly and just a reason to have when you don't have a legitimate excuse, but Cubs fans truly believe it (and sometimes I do too).

The curse is actually a very interesting story. In 1945 (last time the Cubs were in the World Series) owner of the Billy Goat Tavern (a famous bar in Chicago), Billy Sianis, was at the game with his goat when he was asked to leave because people were complaining about the smell. He was so upset he yelled out that the Cubs "aint gonna win no more." They lost that series to the Tigers and that was that.

The whole story is an interesting read and while Cubs fans have tried tirelessly to 'reverse the curse' nothing has stuck. Maybe this will be the year?

Sorry I got so sidetracked here. It's just such an interesting topic that is part of what makes baseball so great! If you want to learn more, google "Curse of the Billy Goat" and watch ESPN's "Catching Hell" which is about the Steve Bartman incident.
