We've been on some really great vacations like Hawaii, Saint Lucia, Italy and Exuma, but it's always been Nantucket that really seemed to be our place.
Rewind back to 2014 when we first started dating and we decided to do a road trip to Boston, Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. We drove up to Boston and stayed a night, then continued driving to the Cape and stayed in a cute Airbnb and took a ferry to Nantucket and MV for day trips during the week.
We were actually scheduled to spend the 4th of July on Nantucket but Hurricane Arthur had different plans and we postposed our day on the island to the 5th. We hopped on the high-speed ferry and the weather was still pretty questionable in the morning. We now understand this is common with Nantucket and the fog. They call it "The Grey Lady."
We first went north(ish) to Brant Point but our bikes didn't navigate the leftover puddles well and the weather on that side of the island was getting worse. So we turned around and headed for Cisco Beach because I read about it on a Lilly Pulitzer "Places to go in Nantucket" article.
This backstory is important because when we got to Cisco the skies opened up to sun and warmth and it was the moment we fell in love with Nantucket. It's such a strange and minor moment but every time I think back, I remember that day and how it hit me like a ton of bricks knowing that this was just where we were meant to be.
There was something special about this Nantucket trip. Being there made us both so happy. The rest of the day was spent at Cisco Brewery (which of course we also loved) where I had my first lobster roll, strolled around downtown admiring the cottages by the wharf, enjoyed a sail around the harbor and then ate at the Juice Bar for the first time which I believe really cemented our hearts in Nantucket.
Andrew and I had fallen so in love with the little island we couldn't wait to get to Martha's Vineyard to see what that had in store for us. But we went, we beached, we rode bikes, we shopped, we ate ice cream and it just wasn't the same. It wasn't Nantucket.
Over the years we explore more of the island and we fall more in love with what it has to offer. It has become our "happy place" and we look forward to visiting every year. We want to introduce it to our friends, our family and make sure that the tradition of going never fades away no matter how busy we may get. It's the place I look forward to visiting every year and where I am the saddest to leave. Down the road I hope it's a place we share our vows and bring our children. And if I ever hit the lottery -- buy a house! lol
I get a good handful of emails and DMs every year asking for things to do and places to eat and while I have THIS 10 Things To Do, it doesn't cover a lot of the island. Would you guys be interested in something more? If so, let me know below and leave any questions you have. I'll be happy to help answer!
