Our September Trip to Nantucket

Our September Trip to Nantucket

We had the most wonderful week in Nantucket celebrating our one year wedding anniversary. It was weird and sad that it was our first time back since the wedding, but September is my favorite time to be on the island. The crowds are a little smaller, the weather (as long as there is no hurricane lol) is so nice, and the water is amazing. It's a great place to be.

Our original plan was to spend this anniversary out of the country, but obviously, things change. This was a perfect excuse to make our first trip since March. We rented a car, left early in the morning, dropped the car the ferry dock in Hyannis, and took the high-speed boat to the island.

The weather on Sunday was amazing. It was one of those perfect September days! We decided to stay in an Airbnb instead of a hotel and found a charming place on Cliff Road, within walking distance to Town and Steps Beach. Sunday was kind of a travel-and-hang-around-the-house day, but I took full advantage of the beautiful sunroom (picture above).

For dinner, we tried our luck at Lola 41, which is slowly becoming my favorite place to eat on the island. It's very trendy and a bit expensive, but SO GOOD. But it's nearly impossible to get a reservation. With COVID, they've been taking reservations only over the phone and only after 4pm. If you call at 3:59pm they will not pick up. Within 10 minutes, the place is booked for the night. Andrew and I called 100 times with no luck. Hungry from our travel day, we tried our luck at getting a table as walk-up guests around 5pm. They were able to seat us right away. Yay for being too old to eat late!

In terms of the menu, everything is good. I'm obsessed with the Maruko roll, and they are known for their great tuna burgers. We got two rolls and two appetizers for dinner. I miss it already lol.

We then walked around town, shopped a little, went to the grocery store to pick up some items for the week, and finally stopped at Juice Bar for our first official cone of the season. I obviously got cake batter and Andrew got the dirty grasshopper since they were out of his favorite coffee cake flavor.

The next day was Labor Day, and I have NEVER seen the island so packed.

It was actually crazy. We grabbed breakfast at The Lemon Press and it was a huge mistake. They were so overwhelmed with orders, it took close to an hour to get an açai bowl and a coffee. But it gave me time to pop into some stores so I didn't *hate* it lol.

I stopped into a few shops on Main Street, my favorite being Erika Wilson to check out their needlepoint items. I told myself that this time next year I hope to be on that wall! On our way back to the house, I also popped into Bon Ton which is a literal shack of antique/thrifted items next to Nautilus. It's one of my favorite stores on the island because every day there is something new and unique.

They also have reasonable prices, and the store owner is the sweetest. It's such a small shop filled with great treasures! I walked in to see this Nantucket basket birdhouse and fell in love with it. But we had just gotten word that we didn't get the house we had been trying to buy, so I had no reason to buy it. Fast forward the next few days, I thought about it constantly and checked in on the store three different times to look at it again before finally giving in and buying. We had plenty of room in our luggage since we took the ferry and I thought of it as a "you didn't get the house, spend some money" present to myself lol.

It was another perfect day and so we packed up our things and headed to the beach!

We ventured on our bikes out to Steps Beach and absolutely loved it. I cannot say enough good things! The water was so calm, it wasn't too crowded, and there were awesome sandbars about 50 yards out in the middle of the ocean. We had a wonderful day.

This is a great beach for kids, but there are a lot of steps to go down/up from the beach (hence the name). Galley and Jetties are also connected along the same shoreline, and Jetties is easier to get to and has more options families. Something to note! If you do find your way to Steps Beach, make sure to stroll around the neighborhood because the houses are unreal.

I spent the day needlepointing. It was the best. Andrew went to grab lunch for us at Jetties and brought back a lobster roll that was filled with meat! Which, for $30 it better be lol. It was so good!

We headed home a little early to get ready for dinner at Keeper's. It had been exactly one year to the day when we had our reception party there! This was our celebratory anniversary dinner. The owners there are some of the best people. They remembered us the moment we walked in! We were their first wedding.

The dinner was amazing and we got way too much food and drinks. I was a little tipsy on the way home lol! But that didn't stop us from getting Juice Bar. Nothing ever does. [Yes, Andrew has a quarantine mustache now and has since I think July? I actually really like it but I think he's looking to get rid of it soon lol.]

On Tuesday, Andrew stayed at the house to work and I went off shopping!

One of my favorite things to do on my own is to pop in and out of all the stores in town. Never judge a book by it's cover with these stores. There are some true gems! My first stop was Centre Point to see their new store and exchange a sweater. Then I was in and out of all the shops buying baby clothes for my SIL!

It was another great day, so I took my time and strolled around. I think it was the most I have walked outside since March! I was really happy to see everyone wearing a mask in Nantucket. In New York, we still take it very seriously, but have found that fewer and fewer people are wearing them outside. So it was a really nice change of pace.

One of my goals for this trip was to find a charm for my bracelet. It was meant to symbolize what Nantucket means to me, our wedding, and the anniversary. I looked at a few different shops but ended up with this little Nantucket Basket from The Jeweler's Gallery. It fits perfectly with my other charms and best of all it has a little penny inside, which holds a special meaning to me. I'm really, really happy with it.

Then the rest of my day was spent checking out local antique stores.

There are, again, a ton of really great ones on the island. There are truly so many. I stopped by the Hospital Thrift Store first (they have everything outdoors and the bigger stuff in an open-aired basement) then walked into Lynda Willauer Antiques which is pictured above. They had AMAZING stuff but was definitely one of the fancier antique stores. It was nice to look but not touch lol.

After Andrew was done with work, we headed back out to Steps Beach to hang for the rest of the day. I forget how nice it is to have space and a beach nearby!

For dinner, we had a barbecue at the house, got Juice Bar (again lol), and watched The Crown!

The next day we both spent the morning working from home and I ventured out for lunch at Provisions. I dream about this place! I know its controversial, but I think it's the best sandwiches on the island! This was my true Nantucket lunch:

After lunch, we again spent most of the day inside working, which is not the most fun thing to do but it needed to be done lol. For dinner, we were hoping to sneak into Nautilus -- like we had at Lola 41 -- but it was a no go. Since most dining is outdoors, there were no available tables. Very sad as it's our favorite place to eat -- and no matter the time of year, impossible to get into!

We ended up at Breeze in the Nantucket Hotel and actually had the same waiter from our rehearsal dinner last year! It was fun to see him. We sat out by the pool and had another amazing dinner. Followed by.... you guessed it! Juice Bar. Is it gross how much we ate there?!

Thursday was our last full day on the island and Andrew took off from work so we could do our traditional "best day ever" routine. This day consists of all of our favorite things: biking out to Bartlett's Farm and picking up breakfast sandwiches (and snacks and banana bread for the beach), then biking out to Cisco Beach to eat, watch the surfers, and enjoy the day. Then off to Cisco Brewery for drinks and lunch! The best day ever. Weather-wise it wasn't the greatest, but nothing was going to stop us from going!

Cisco Brewery was great and had a totally revamped experience for COVID.

They have individual tables and seats for everyone, and you can only be at a table for two hours. They have waiters to serve you, and you only need to get up to get food. If you've ever been to Cisco, then you know how amazing it is to get a seat for two hours lol. We met up with some friends and drank all the Bloody Marys!! It was an awesome day.

Before dinner, we returned our bikes, picked up some fudge to bring home, and then stopped by Oath pizza to take out our dinner. We just wanted something quick since it was raining, Andrew had his fantasy football draft and I needed to do some work for the store!

And then Friday morning we were off! We took the hour ferry back, picked up a new rental car, and made it home in time for lunch. A long but fun day. It's sad to be home already, but we had the best week on the island.
