Starting a Charm Bracelet

Today's post is a bit different, but something that has pretty much been consuming my passive thoughts for a year or two: starting a charm bracelet. And I've decided this is the year I am going to do it! There is just something so special when you see a full charm bracelet, and it's something, I think, that has been a tradition that has faded.

As I've gotten older, I've found my love for fine jewelry. I love wearing, I love mixing, searching, and finding new and old jewelry that will be with me for years to come. I used to be really bad with jewelry and losing it often, which I think was a big deterrent of mine for many years.

I would say things changed around the time I bought my first nice watch and then continued when I would get a special ring and, of course, things really took off when I got engaged. Having a piece of jewelry that was so special to me -- that held such meaning, it was just different. And so started my quest for "forever" jewelry items.

My current every day is my engagement + wedding ring, my Cartier watch, my tennis bracelet, my grandmother's wedding ring, and a Cartier Love ring that I got from my parents for a dual wedding/Christmas gift. My alternates include a pearl bracelet from my best friend's wedding and a David Yurman ring from my sister. Each one holding such meaning! I believe when fine jewelry has a story, it's that more fun to wear.

As for what's next? I have three things on my wish list. First, I've put in the request for a matching bracelet to my love ring for my 30th birthday, second, I want to create a pinky ring (for my right hand) with the Robertson family crest and third, I want to start a charm bracelet.

I've been thinking about and debating this for about two years and I'm making it a priority for 2020 to start my official charm bracelet. I say official because I had one when I was younger that I'm pretty sure has like a smiley face on it and maybe a dog lol. It was something fun and young but this time around I want it to represent my life.

I've always been in love with the idea of passing things down to my children. I've been saving clothes, images, shoes, and jewelry for them and call me crazy but I partly designed my engagement ring with the idea of passing it down to future generations! Again, I love things that tell stories. The idea of starting something like this, adding a new charm every time I hit a milestone, it's like a story for years to come.

And that's a lot of pressure! I don't want to just go with something to do it, I want to be smart, educated and invest properly. I want it to take time and I want it to represent me. So I've been doing a lot of thinking: what color, what chain style, thickness, what charms to get, and where to buy them all.

After some research, I think I've narrowed down a company to start building out my dream: Charm Co. I think it was Julia who first shared them on Instagram and it was kind of like a light bulb in my head. They were the perfect mix of new and old, unique and timeless, and had a ton of options.

So here is where I'd love your opinions, feedback, and advice!! We're doing gold, I think I love the idea of a double link bracelet. Something a little more vintage-inspired (but classic) and sturdy. In terms of charms, this is what I'm thinking:

1. A charm to represent our wedding -- I'm a big fan of this calendar charm, with a sapphire stone on our date.

2. A charm for the University of Kentucky -- I would love to find something more similar to the above charms, with engravement and colors. I haven't found anything yet, but I will be on the hunt.

3. A charm for New York -- This will need to be a charm that speaks to me as there are a million New York City charm options. When I think of New York and look to my bracelet, what will I want to see?

4. A charm for Nantucket -- I've always loved the idea of a lighthouse or Nantucket basket charm. But again, it will need to be something that truly speaks to me and represents all I love about the island.

5. A charm for Australia/New Zealand -- When we were away on our honeymoon, I was actively stopping into any jewelry store I could find. I was able to find a beautiful gold charm of New Zealand but nothing of Australia. The question now becomes, do I need two?

And that's where I'm at. I don't want to overdo it early, as I have a long time to fill it up. Future charms will be for children, houses, big trips, family and so on. It's going to be really fun searching and waiting to find the perfect charm to make my bracelet complete. I'm really looking forward to it!!
